Just as new flowers bloom and fill empty trees with colour, so do the people of Afghanistan celebrate the new year with colour, and celebration.

The start of the new year is marked by the start of spring. Just as new flowers bloom and fill empty trees with colour, so do the people of Afghanistan celebrate this new year with colour, and celebration. Nawruz is celebrated widely in Afghanistan, from the preparation of Haft Mewa to the festivals of Gul -e Surkh (Red Flower Festival) New Year’s Day is a time of rejoice, and happiness.

In Queensland, the New Year’s Day celebration saw over 300 people gathering, and sharing a meal with friends and family. A combination of live music, great food, and great company made the night a highlight. The live entertainment in particular — featuring Dari, Pashto, Hazaragi, and Urdu music — was a big hit. May this year, and future years, see peace and prosperity within Afghanistan.
